I've always admired Mitt Romney. May not agree with him on all the issues (legislating universal health care in Massachusetts), but I can only dream of what could have been if the country was being guided by his steady hand given the economic land mines we as a nation must navigate through. Romney, always a well spoken governor found his national message after Michigan, but couldn't deliver SC thanks to Huckabee colluding with McCain's people. Chalk it up to hardball politics and a lesson learned moving forward to 2012. Here's another lesson I hope he learns. Never, ever use the language of the left in a public forum.
This week, Romney was overheard at some stuffy GOP, inside the beltway dinner saying that 'Republicans shouldn't oppose President Obama as a reflex and should praise him when he succeeds'.
Err!! That was troubling, and then came the disturbing part:
“I also think it’s important for us to nod to the president when he’s right. He will not always be wrong.”
For those who believed he spoke in Reagan overtones, this was not a Reaganesque moment. First, if we as conservatives agree with the President on anything over the next four years why should we acknowledge it in a public forum? No conservative is lauding BHO on his Afghanistan policy; conversely when Rush Limbaugh said 'I hope Obama fails' it was in the context of him failing to move a socialist agenda forward. Now Romney would certainly agree with that wouldn't he?
Second, Romney made a mistake by accepting the premise of the argument the left has been trying to leverage from since Obama took office. Why defend something that didn't need defending in this first place? On the rare occasion that Obama is right just leave it alone; don't nod, don't soft peddle. When he's wrong, the opportunity must be pounced on....politically and intellectually.
I have about 3.6 trillion reasons why Mr. Global Citizen is wrong for America. Lord knows the Bush White House had their problems, but #43 would never use the pulpit to call America 'arrogant' while speaking in a country that wouldn't be around if it were not for the American soldier’s spilled blood.
If one can’t deny the media has been derelict in their journalistic duties, then it’s palpable to say that Obama doesn't need to be stroked by the man many are counting on to unseat him in 2012.
Memo to Mitt Romney handlers: Get serious about winning.
